Understanding and Delivering Hydropower's Full Value to the Nation's Power System

Hydropower is unique among renewable resources. Hydropower generation is relatively predictable. With a reservoir, its fuel can be controlled, dispatched as needed to balance changing electric loads or other intermittent renewable resources such as wind and solar.

To maximize the contribution of hydropower, we must understand the full range of values that hydropower can provide. PNNL provides advanced analytical tools so that grid operators and dam operators can reliably, efficiently, and cost effectively manage hydropower systems in real time as well as plan into the future under changing climate conditions. PNNL researchers assess the electric grid's capacity to use stored energy and meet national goals to advance renewable energy deployment.
