International Research

Hydropower was the first source of electricity in the U.S. and formed the backbone of our electric infrastructure. As a cheap and reliable source of power, hydropower is crucial to many electric grids around the world in both developed and developing nations. PNNL scientists, engineers, and researchers from the hydropower-rich Pacific Northwest work to make new and existing hydropower more sustainable domestically and abroad. We support the transfer of technology and expertise to build and retrofit hydropower that balances the need for electricity with the necessity to sustain the environment. The lessons PNNL has learned in the U.S. are now being applied in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, and South America.
